Cannon Sentry. Photo by Kenneth Dalecki

A cannon cast in 1672 guards the entrance to the Greek port of Nafplio.

I can't resist photographing old cannons looking out from their forts. My collection includes scenes from St. Augustine, San Juan, Havana, Manila, Hong Kong, and Macau...relics for the Spanish, Portuguese and British empires.

New Life in Lava. Photo by Kenneth Dalecki

Mt. Etna in Sicily has been erupting for some 500,000 years, most recently in December, 2018. But plant life continues to erupt from its hard lava fields, as shown in this photo.

It is fascinating to see life surviving to hostile and decimated landscapes. I've collected examples from the slopes of Mt. St. Helen's, Washington, which flattened and buried with ash thousands of acres of forest in its 1980 eruption, to flora on the cold windswept slopes of Cape Horn, Chile

Dresden by Nite. Photo by Kenneth Dalecki

Destroyed by by Allied bombing at the end of World War II, Dresden Germany's baroque and rococo city center has been restored to much of its former splendor.

A fast-paced trip through Poland and Germany included a late afternoon stop in beautiful Dresden. Making the most of my time there included night shots of the city.

How many Albanians does it take to change a light bulb?. Photo by Kenneth Dalecki

In Berat, Albania, it takes four workers to fix this light in the once isolated communist-ruled country.

Berat is a beautiful UNESCO World Heritage site with a 2,400 year old castle on the Osumi River. Forty years of communism ended in 1989 and the still-poor country is working to catch up with its European neighbors. Watching four men work on a street lamp during a recent visit seemed like a fitting example of lingering inefficiency.

Ken Dalecki became a photographer during his 1967-'68 hitch in the Navy as editor of the naval air station newspaper at Subic Bay in the Philippines. His work was widely used in military publications, including a center spread in Pacific Stars & Stripes. His professional career in journalism has been as a writer and editor but he continues to enjoy photography and has taken his camera on travels to six continents.
