Farm the District has an unusual approach in community gardens. Traditional community gardens offer individual plots, have waiting periods and sometimes fees. But everyone shares in the work at Temperance Alley as they arrive, usually on Saturdays and Sundays. Produce is donated to charity and also to the volunteers.

Morgan photo 1 Ruth gleaning in Boaz's Field
The young lady's dedication and love for gardening seemed iconic and Biblical in its intensity. It reminded me of a notable woman of the Bible, Ruth, working in the field. Boaz was impressed with her industry.
In a few short months millennial gardeners have turned a vacant lot at 1909 13th St NW into a show place of vegetables and flowers, under the newly formed organization, Farm the district. It is run by Dr. Kate Tully, associate professor of agrecology at Maryland University, and Chris Winfield, geographer at the U.S. Census Bureau, who comes from along line of gardeners and supervises his family farm in Peru.

Anyone can work on the farm, regardless of their experience. Volunteers enjoy the flow of knowledge and build relationships..Farm the District has an unusual approach to urban gardening. Traditional urban gardens have individual beds where a person might have to wait years to get a plot and then pay an annual fee. At Temperance Alley, at 1909 13th Street, NW, gardeners can sign up for projects that vary each time. Their organic produce is shared among the volunteers as well as with charity.
