The old and new Persia appears on every street corner and in every magnificent mosque. Shiraz, Iran

Along with author Richard Bangs and five other travellers, I discovered an Iran very different from the American political picture of that nation and former empire (2017).

Festival of the Holy Ghost every year is an extravaganza of floral and spiritual reflection on Portugal's island gems in the mid-Atlantic Ocean -- the Azores. Ponta Delgada offers up a particularly spectacular march of thousands of faithful along the route of the flowers.

I spent hours standing in hot sun with thousands of Azores' islanders awaiting the passage of the risen Easter Christ adorned in countless gems and flowers.

Easter Island's legacy and revelation to travellers like me are never forgotten. On this remote tiny island in the Pacific Ocean are great stone monuments, alive and dead (or asleep).

Every springtime, around Easter, Rapa Nui (Isla Pascua), better known as Easter Island, hosts guests from around the Pacific for annual Polynesian games and celebrations that are unlike any other festivals in the world. I spent a week in a bungalow next to the raucous sea and explored many of the nearly 1000 moai by bike and car on this paradise-like island. One has to rely on only a few flights a week to reach this destination, and the weather can prevent either ship or plane from making landfall. Once there though, life slows down and both majestic nature (ocean, volcanos, sunrises and sunsets) and human history (stored in the gaze of giant stone sentinels) are daily companions.
