The Onrust at Sunrise. Photo by Janet Philips

The Onrust is a replica of Dutch explorer Adriaen Block's 1614 ship, the first European vessel to enter the Connecticut River.

I was leaving Essex to return to DC for a few days when I noticed the sun rising. I detoured to the harbor to take this photo.

While kayaking I was drawn to this boat's colors and their reflection in the water. I took a few wider shots, but I liked the painterly quality of the close up shot.

I paddle around the marshes of North Cove and spotted this canoe practically hidden by grasses.

Clouds and reflections are my favorite things to photograph.

I have been retired for 3 years after working at the Washington Post (photo librarian) and 29 years at the White House (photo archivist). I split my time between the DC area and Essex, Connecticut. I love kayaking and photographing around picturesque Essex.
