Semiconductor Partnership to Focus on Energy Technologies

High Tension Lines (Marcus Wong)Semiconductor Research Corporation, a university-research consortium for semiconductors and related technologies has established a $5 million industry-university partnership to bring new energy systems and technologies to the marketplace. Founding industry members include ABB, Applied Materials, Bosch, First Solar, IBM, Nexans and Tokyo Electron.

The new Energy Research Initiative will team companies from semiconductors and related sectors with university research centers to address alternative energy sources and prepare students with the technical skills needed for jobs in the industry.

The first research projects will address new modeling and simulation tools to develop better photovoltaic devices, as well as systems and technologies to enable an efficient, reliable and secure smart grid infrastructure integrated with renewable energy sources.

The photovoltaic research will be conducted at Purdue University, which has extensive modeling/simulation expertise and its Network for Computational Nanotechnology framework to provide analytical models and simulation tools for photovoltaic manufacturers.

Research on the smart grid will be centered at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), which will develop dynamic monitoring and decision systems needed to create a new paradigm for the electricity infrastructure. CMU will also do research on personal energy systems that offer individuals and organizations choices and flexibility in the use of energy.
