This USPTO staffer is expected to serve individuals and institutions in the greater New York City region.

The USPTO’s Innovation and Outreach Coordinator will be asked to help Cornell’s new institution break down traditional boundaries between graduate education and the research and development of technology products. The coordinator is expected to connect students, faculty and mentors to early-stage investors, intellectual property strategies, export assistance tools, government grants, and academic partners.

“Cornell NYC Tech has always been envisioned as both a birthplace of new ideas as well as a driver of economic growth,” says New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg. “This new partnership will help make sure that the new campus becomes both of those things, by creating a close linkage between academics and the real economy.”

Cornell University and Technion were selected in December 2011 to build the applied science and engineering campus in New York City. While currently located in the Chelsea section of Manhattan, the permanent home of the graduate-level campus will cover a 12-acre site on Roosevelt Island in the East River that is scheduled open in 2017, with full construction completed by 2037.

Beginning in January 2013, the Cornell Tech campus will offer a one-year masters of engineering degree in computer science, followed by additional masters-level programs in information science, operations research, and electrical and computer engineering. The campus has begun accepting applications for its first class of master of engineering in computer science. The university says candidates should have the “highest academic credentials, demonstrate strong entrepreneurial interests, leadership skills and a passion for community engagement.”

Read more:

USPTO to Expand to Texas, Colorado, California

Women U.S. Patent Holders Increase Sharply in 2010

America Invents Act Signed Into Law

U.S. Patent Office Signs New, Expanded Reciprocity Deals

*     *     *

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) will assign a staff member to the New York City campus of Cornell University, a technology institute being developed in partnership with Technion-Israel Institute of Technology.
