Financial and intellectual property aspects of the deal were not disclosed.<\/p>\n<p>Beans from castor plants (<i><a href=\"http:\/\/plants.usda.gov\/core\/profile?symbol=rico3#\">Ricinus communis<\/a>)\u00a0<\/i>have the potential to become a <a href=\"http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/ejlt.200900138\/abstract?systemMessage=Wiley+Online+Library+will+be+disrupted+Saturday%2C+15+March+from+10%3A00-12%3A00+GMT+%2806%3A00-08%3A00+EDT%29+for+essential+maintenance\">rich source<\/a> of industrial oils, plastics, chemicals, and biofuels, particularly as a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ars.usda.gov\/research\/projects\/projects.htm?accn_no=419007\">renewable feedstock<\/a> and additional cash crop for farmers. In September 2013, Evogene Ltd., an Israeli agricultural biotechnology company and SLC Agricola in Brazil began commercial development of <a href=\"http:\/\/sciencebusiness.technewslit.com\/?p=15456\">engineered castor beans<\/a> as an alternative source for biodiesel and other industrial products.<\/p>\n<p>But castor beans are also <a href=\"http:\/\/www.library.illinois.edu\/vex\/toxic\/castor\/castor.htm\">highly toxic<\/a>, and the source of ricin,\u00a0\u00a0implicated in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fbi.gov\/news\/pressrel\/press-releases\/fbi-response-to-reports-of-suspicious-letters-received-at-mail-facilities\">ricin-laced letters<\/a> sent last year to addresses in Washington, D.C., including the White House. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/NIOSH\/ershdb\/EmergencyResponseCard_29750002.html\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a> says exposure to even a small amount of ricin can be fatal.<\/p>\n<p>Novo Synthetix is in the business of producing castor beans without ricin. Its <a href=\"http:\/\/novasynthetix.com\/technology\/\">strategy<\/a> is to develop a new variety of castor plant, but without the introduction of alien genes, thus avoiding the label of a genetically-modified plant, which would make it more difficult to market in the U.S. and Europe.<\/p>\n<p>Under the deal,\u00a0Novo Synthetix will employ <a href=\"http:\/\/www.precisionbiosciences.com\/technology\/dne.php\">gene-editing technology<\/a> from\u00a0Precision BioSciences to create the non-ricin castor plant, yet still be considered non-genetically modified.\u00a0Precision BioSciences uses enzymes it developed to alter natural genetic sequences. The company says its technology makes it possible to insert new genes into the sequence, or deactivate or remove unwanted genes. In addition, the technology can excise unwanted smaller genetic fragments rather than entire genes.<\/p>\n<p>Novo Synthetix\u00a0was founded in 2012 and received a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbiotech.org\/content\/nova-synthetix-company-inception\">$50,000 loan<\/a> from the North Carolina Biotechnology Center in 2013.
