A collaboration among the pharmaceutical company <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gsk.com\/media\/press-releases\/2014\/where-do-you-start-when-developing-a-new-medicine-.html\">GlaxoSmithKline<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.embl.de\/aboutus\/communication_outreach\/media_relations\/2014\/140327_Hinxton\/index.html\">European Bioinformatics Institute<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sanger.ac.uk\/about\/press\/2014\/140327.html\">Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute<\/a> aims to tap the power of genomic sequencing combined with bioinformatics to boost the success rate of discovering safe and effective medicines. Financial details of the partnership creating the new Centre for Therapeutic Target Validation\u00a0were not disclosed.<\/p>\n<p>The consortium seeks to better understand biological targets for drugs earlier in the discovery and development process. The success rate of drugs in clinical trials is dropping, according to a study published earlier this year in the journal <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/nbt\/journal\/v32\/n1\/full\/nbt.2786.html\"><em>Nature Biotechnology<\/em><\/a>. The study notes that the likelihood of drugs in early-stage (phase 1) trials <a href=\"http:\/\/www.clinicalinformaticsnews.com\/eCliniqua_article.aspx?id=133808\">clearing all checkpoints<\/a> and getting approved is only about 10 percent, although the rate is a bit higher &#8212; 15% &#8212; for drugs&#8217; primary disease targets.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0\u00a0Centre for Therapeutic Target Validation plans to improve those odds by exploring the large volumes of data generated from genomic sequencing, protein chemistry, and the biology of disease.\u00a0The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute will contribute its expertise in genetics, while\u00a0GlaxoSmith Kline will furnish its experience in\u00a0disease biology, translational medicine, and drug discovery.<\/p>\n<p>European Bioinformatics Institute, a division of\u00a0European Molecular Biology Laboratory, will provide its bioinformatics resources to integrate and analyze the anticipated large volumes of data to be collected. The results of the Centre&#8217;s efforts are expected to complement other research methods, including\u00a0preclinical animal tests and disease epidemiology.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the Centre expects to immediately share its sequencing and other data with the larger scientific community, consistent with the partner organizations&#8217; guidelines and after quality-assurance checks. The Centre also anticipates submitting its findings for publication in scientific journals.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ebi.ac.uk\/about\/people\/ewan-birney\">Ewan Birney<\/a>, associate director of European Bioinformatics Institute,\u00a0was named interim director of the Centre, who will be joined by up to 50 researchers from the three organizations.
