Sales for the third quarter of 2010 came to $79.4 billion, a 6.1 percent increase compared to the second quarter when sales were $74.8 billion. Third quarter sales were 26.2 percent higher than the $62.9 billion for the same three-month period in 2009.

In September, all regions registered semiconductor sales gains, although weakest in the Americas with an 0.5% increase. Sales in Europe, Japan, and other Asia-Pacific countries rose 3 to 4 percent. Compared to September of 2009, however, chip sales in the Americas scored the greatest gains, jumping nearly 40 percent. Comparing second to third quarters in 2010, Japan made the highest increases with an 11.5 percent jump, the only double-digit gain.

All monthly sales numbers represent a three-month moving average. SIA says the moving average is a mathematical smoothing technique that mitigates variations due to differences in companies’ financial calendars.

Related:

Global Semiconductor Sales Rise in August

Worldwide Semiconductor Sales Rise in July

Global Chip Sales Rise But Growth Expected to Ease

Photo: Peter Shanks/Flickr

The Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) reports today (1 November) that semiconductor companies booked worldwide sales of $26.5 billion in September 2010, a gain of 2.9 percent from August when sales were $25.8 billion.
