A genetics analysis company in Boston is offering full genomic sequencing, priced at under $1,000, for people willing to share the results with biomedical researchers. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.veritasgenetics.com\/documents\/VG-PGP-Announcement-Final.pdf\">Veritas Genetics<\/a>, a spin-off enterprise from Harvard Medical School, is making the offer to participants in\u00a0the\u00a0Personal Genome Project.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.genomenewsnetwork.org\/resources\/whats_a_genome\/Chp2_1.shtml\">Genomic sequencing<\/a> reveals the order of nucleic acids, the chemical building blocks, in a person&#8217;s DNA that contain&#8217;s the individual&#8217;s genetic code, providing\u00a0critical\u00a0information about one&#8217;s\u00a0present and future health. Analysis of that genetic code requires enormous computing power to determine the sequence of\u00a0the 3 billion base pairs of complementary molecules in\u00a0someone&#8217;s DNA, but the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.genome.gov\/sequencingcosts\/\">cost<\/a> of that computing power is steadily declining, and breaking the $1,000 cost per\u00a0analysis is long considered the tipping point in making this\u00a0tool more widely available.<\/p>\n<p>Veritas Genetics provides <a href=\"http:\/\/www.veritasgenetics.com\/company.html\">technical and computational analysis<\/a> for sequencing a human genome, but also offers an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.veritasgenetics.com\/providers.html\">interpretation and report<\/a> to physicians highlighting variants indicating a potential for disease. The company was co-founded by <a href=\"http:\/\/arep.med.harvard.edu\/gmc\/\">George Church<\/a>, a genetics professor at Harvard Medical School as well as a core faculty member of the Wyss Institute, a biomedical engineering center at Harvard. Research in <a href=\"http:\/\/arep.med.harvard.edu\/\">Church&#8217;s lab<\/a>\u00a0led to many of the advances in genomic technology making lower cost sequencing possible.<\/p>\n<p>Church also serves as director of\u00a0the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.personalgenomes.org\/\">Personal Genome Project<\/a>, an organization encouraging individuals to share their genomic data for research purposes, despite the risks of personal identification.\u00a0In addition,\u00a0<span class=\"xn-person\">Preston Estep who serves as chief scientist at Veritas Genetics is sequencing director at Personal Genome Project, while\u00a0Joseph Thakuria, chief medical officer at Veritas has the same role at\u00a0Personal Genome Project.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Personal Genome Project, a not-for-profit organization also spun-off from Harvard, recruits researchers to use the data and share their findings, adding to the general body of genomic knowledge. Some 16,000 individuals worldwide offer their genomic data to the\u00a0Personal Genome Project; participants in the project can now have their whole genomes sequenced by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.veritasgenetics.com\/pgp\/\">Veritas Genetics<\/a>, for under $1,000, which includes interpretation and genetic counseling.<\/p>\n<p>In June 2015, Veritas Genetics began offering screenings for mutations in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.veritasgenetics.com\/my-brca.html\">BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes<\/a> associated with breast and ovarian cancer.
