22 Dec. 2018. A big part of the business news we cover in Science & Enterprise is investments, including when companies go public, known as initial public offerings or IPOs. We’ve reported on several IPOs in the past few months, most recently the blockbuster Moderna Therapeutics IPO raising more than $600 million, considered the largest biotech IPO ever. The links below offer other examples as well.<\/p>\n

Of course the very next day, Moderna’s stock dropped more than 19 percent, foreshadowing an extended decline in biotechnology stocks overall. Nasdaq’s biotechnology stock index<\/a> is down 16 percent for the year so far, including a 4 percent decline just yesterday. The Nasdaq composite index<\/a>, home to many technology companies, is down nearly 11 percent for the year so far and 3 percent yesterday.<\/p>\n

Our friends at CB Insights recently issued its annual Tech IPO Report<\/a>, showing the number of initial public stock offerings in the technology industries unchanged from 2017, this weekend’s infographic. In fact, the 19 IPOs in each of the past 2 years is well down from the peak of 33 in 2014. The report indicates investors are much more interested in private than public offerings, with almost 6 times as many private fundings of $100 million or more than IPOs among tech companies in the U.S. this year.<\/p>\n
