The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a> (CDC) awarded $10 million for new research to five academic medical centers to develop and test new ways to reduce infections in health care settings. CDC estimates that 1 out of 20 hospitalized patients will acquire an infection, including drug-resistant infections, while receiving health care treatment for other conditions.<\/p>\n

The grants, awarded under CDC’s Prevention Epicenters Program<\/a>, will test several technologies and processes aimed at reducing infections in health care settings:<\/p>\n

– Combinations of bleach and ultraviolet light to clean hospital rooms to help prevent infection
\n– Tests that help distinguish patients who need antibiotics from those who don’t, as a means to prevent antibiotic-resistant infections
\n– Methods to help doctors anticipate when medical devices used to treat a patient are on the verge of causing an infection, so that device-associated infections can be averted
\n– Treating patients with harmless living microorganisms but still compete with harmful germs<\/p>\n
