4 May 2019. Many of the advances we present on Science & Enterprise use Internet connections for individuals to share data, with cloud computing to store large databases and run algorithms. But all of those great ideas require a population connected to the Internet.<\/p>\n

Our friends at Statista<\/a> published a chart yesterday showing we’re not quite there yet, at least in the U.S., this weekend’s infographic. The chart draws from a Pew Research Center<\/a> survey conducted in January and February, showing 1 in 10 people in the U.S. still do not use the Internet. Demographic breakdowns of the data indicate Internet non-users tend to be older — more than a quarter of those older than 65 — as well as poor, living in rural areas, and with less than a high school education.<\/p>\n

Yet many people in these demographic groups are those with chronic disorders like heart disease or diabetes, who can benefit from mobile connections tracking their conditions. It remains a challenge for researchers and public health authorities to get these technologies into the hands of people who can gain the most from them.<\/p>\n
