31 Aug. 2020.\u00a0 We return to our regular Monday feature on Science & Enterprise, an update on Covid-19 therapies and vaccines in development. The report is provided by BioRender<\/a>, in Toronto, Ontario, a company offering illustration and graphics tools for life sciences, biotechnology, and other disciplines.<\/p>\n

Since our last report on 17 August, activity is picking up in both vaccines and therapies for Covid-19. The number of vaccines in development increased by six to 170, while those in clinical trials also gained six, now at 47. Therapies, however, increased by more than twice those numbers, now at 379 in development and 293 in clinical trials, an increase of 15 in each case.<\/p>\n

The global vaccine effort received a boost today when the European Commission<\/a> announced a contribution of \u20ac400 million ($US 477 million) to the COVID-19 Vaccine Global Access, or Covax<\/a>, consortium of World Health Organization and not-for-profit groups. The Covax project is encouraging manufacturers and governments to ensure Covid-19 vaccines are available to lower income regions and the most vulnerable populations.<\/p>\n
