4 June 2022. The Covid-19 pandemic forced many U.S. employers to close their workplaces early on, requiring workers to furlough or work from home. Some employers, such as health care facilities and food stores, remained staffed even during the early lockdowns, but a large segment of the working population had to do their jobs from home, with varying degrees of success.<\/p>\n

New data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics<\/a> or BLS, and displayed in chart form last week by the business research company Statista<\/a>, indicate the work-from-home era may be closing. BLS added questions to its Current Population Survey beginning in May 2020 on telework or work-from-home to gauge the impact of Covid-19 on labor markets, with latest data released for April 2022.<\/p>\n

The BLS data show more than one in three U.S. workers (35%) worked remotely in May 2020, but by April of this year only eight percent are still working from home due to the pandemic. While the overall trend of remote work is declining during that two-year period, the BLS data show temporary upward blips in the later months of 2020 and 2021, which correspond to recurring Covid-19 infection waves at those times.<\/p>\n
