The new Swedish Gasification Centre (SFC) on the Lule\u00e5 campus is expected to have a budget of SEK 540 million (USD 84.7 million) over 10 years.<\/p>\n<p>SFC will combine industry and academic researchers from Ume\u00e5 University and Chalmers University of Technology, as well as Lule\u00e5. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.etcpitea.se\/en\/\">Energy Technology Center<\/a> (ETC) in Pite\u00e5 and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bio4energy.se\/#\">Bio4Energy<\/a> are also project participants. Both organizations work in alternative fuels that take advantage of Sweden&#8217;s experience in forest-based industries.<\/p>\n<p>Lule\u00e5 adjunct professor Rikard Gebart will lead SFC. Gebart is also president of Energy Technology Center, a research and development facility for renewable fuels focusing on combustion, gasification, and biorefining processes. Last month, ETC began real-world tests of a pilot-scale biomass gasifier that turns forest residues into synthetic gas for transportation biofuels.<\/p>\n<p>The Bio4Energy project includes academic and industrial scientists conducting R&amp;D on biomass feedstocks, from the design of seeds through recycling or recovering byproducts that typically go to waste in forestry operations.
