Double Helix LLC, also of Boulder and founded by engineering professor Rafael Piestun, has negotiated an exclusive license to commercialize the technology from the university’s technology transfer office.

Piestun developed a form of super-resolution imaging that comprises techniques to enhance the resolution of an imaging system beyond the limitations set by the diffraction of light. His research has led to three-dimensional optics and post-processing techniques for quality improvement in image processing.

Piestun is also director of the university’s Program in Computational Optical Sensing and Imaging, funded by National Science Foundation. The technology based on his research is considered important to the development of next-generation microscopes and other optical instruments.

Super-resolution 3-D imaging capability has the potential for use in thousands of cellular, molecular biology and biophysics laboratories worldwide; see example at top. Piestun says the Double Helix technology platform can be applied to scientific and industrial optics, including microscopy, metrology, and computational digital photography.

Piestun founded Double Helix LLC in 2011. The company’s products integrate micro-and nano-technologies with computational algorithms to reduce the cost, size, and complexity of optical instrumentation. Piestun says Double Helix collaborates with scientists at Colorado to develop and commercialize computational optical-digital technologies used in range estimation, super-resolution, and 3D imaging.

Read more: Caltech Develops High Rez, High Speed, High Depth 3D Imaging

*     *     *

University of Colorado in Boulder has licensed an advanced imaging technology developed in its engineering labs to a start-up company founded by the technology’s inventor.
